Through workshops and events, the Just Human Academy provides information and offers a space for exchange, celebration, reflection, well-being, and conversation. Volunteers who take part in the Just Human Academy’s programs are warmly invited to pay the reduced participation fee. Any proceeds from Academy offerings support the work of Just Human.

Discovering Diversity – Life Stories of LGBTQI+

With this project, just human offers programming suitable for various event formats.

Whether for small or large groups, older or younger audiences, for a multi-hour event or a brief input session: diversity can be explored anywhere and in many different ways. We are happy to discuss individually how your event should be designed, for example as:

  • a reading with discussion
  • a workshop
  • a short contribution at a larger event
  • a listening station in a public space or event venue
  • a program during school project days for different age groups

HOW DO I RECOGNIZE TRAUMA? BASICS OF STRESS AND TRAUMA

Workshop, approx. 4 hours

Presenter: Katja Walterscheid, Diplom-Psychologist, Psychotherapist

What exactly is trauma? Do refugee experiences always lead to trauma? How can we recognize trauma and how should we respond? In this workshop, the concepts of trauma and stress are explained, symptoms and triggers are discussed, and fundamental principles for dealing with them are presented for non-professionals—such as volunteers in refugee support work and/or individuals managing their own refugee experiences. The STA® model – stress- and trauma-sensitive approach – by medica mondiale, which is applicable in non-therapeutic settings, serves as a foundation.

A compassionate, self-aware attitude is essential in trauma-related contexts to prevent secondary trauma, re-traumatization, and transference of trauma processes. Therefore, self-care is also a key part of the workshop.

Workshops on stress, trauma, and self-care can be tailored to various target groups and levels of depth.

We also offer coaching for paid staff and/or volunteers working with refugees.

SOUNDS CONNECT – INTRODUCTION TO SINGING BOWL THERAPY

Workshop, approx. 4 hours

Presenter: Brigitta Specht, Sound Therapist

This introductory workshop in singing bowl therapy, led by sound therapist Brigitta Specht, demonstrates how gentle sound vibrations can relax and calm body, mind, and spirit.

The four-hour workshop includes theoretical and practical components. Brigitta Specht demonstrates and explains sound massage. Singing bowls are placed on the clothed body and gently tapped. After a tea break, participants will practice the sound massage on each other and experience how this therapeutic method—and the attentive, appreciative interaction between people—liberates and strengthens.

Singing bowl therapy is soothing for anyone seeking relaxation yet struggling to unwind. It can also be healing and calming for older adults or individuals with disabilities.

LOVE AS A REASON FOR FLIGHT – SITUATION OF LGBTQI+ PEOPLE IN GREECE

Film and discussion, approx. 1.5 hours

Just Human provides information about the situation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, intersex, and queer (LGBTTIQ) individuals who have fled African countries to Greece. Conditions for the LGBTQI+ community in Africa are particularly difficult. According to ILGA – the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association – nearly half of the 72 countries worldwide where same-sex relations are illegal are in Africa. In Sudan, Somalia, Mauritania, and northern Nigeria, homosexuality is punishable by death. In others, long prison sentences apply. Discrimination is widespread. People face persecution, exclusion, and often physical and sexual violence. However, there are also countries such as Angola, South Africa, and Mozambique where homosexuality and transgender identity are accepted and legally protected.

With a film documenting LGBTQI+ individuals who fled African states and sought safety in Greece, we allow these individuals to speak for themselves. When possible, just human will invite LGBTQI+ refugees from African countries currently living in Stuttgart to share their experiences.

Just Human aims to raise awareness about the situation of LGBTQI+ individuals worldwide and shed light on current human-rights conditions. Current support projects for LGBTQI+ refugees will also be presented.

Following the informational portion, attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and join the discussion.
