Self sewn masks for Moria – a colourful signal of solidarity

The situation in the Greek refugee camps is catastrophic and the fear of an infection with Corona is also great among the refugees. Just Human therefore launched a special campaign of solidarity with refugees during the Corona pandemic in March with the Stuttgart-based company Planet Bamboo GmbH.

It started with a small miracle: In mid-March we received a call for help from a partner organisation: ‘We urgently need protective masks for refugees!’ The very next day we received an email from Lea Müller-Schanz, Marketing Manager of Planet Bamboo GmbH: “I would like to call on creative people who are in the home office or working short time like me to sew masks (…) and then donate them.

The response was great: Individual sewers and sewing groups from Rastatt, Stuttgart, Cologne, Mannheim, Offenbach, from the whole Saarland, from Verl and Vohenstrauß… made beautiful, self-sewn masks for people in the camp Moria on Lesbos and LGBT refugees in Athens. Thousands of masks are on their way to Greece or already arrived there. Through partner organisations of just human on Lesbos and on the Greek mainland, the self-sewn masks are immediately passed on to refugees there.

An important partner in this is Melinda McRostie from the Starfish Foundation. She reports that the colorful masks are accepted with enthusiasm in Moria. The self-sewn masks are not only a small protection against infection, they are above all a great sign of solidarity with refugees. This solidarity is noticed and gives courage in a desperate situation.

To give the people of Moria the opportunity to wash their hands, the Starfish Foundation has set up hand washing stations in many places in Moria. These stations are now also used to distribute the masks. And especially important: dirty masks can be returned there, they are washed and cleanly distributed again. What sounds simple is a major campaign, because 18,000 masks are collected and washed in this way every day and then distributed again.

Donations for this important project under the keyword “Mask project – washing the masks in Moria” we forward 100%.
